Word History The Germanic people who lived in northern Europe in ancient times worshiped many gods. One of the most important of these was a war god whose name in Old English was Tiw. The third day of the week was known as timacrwesdæg, "day of Tiw," in honor of this god. Modern English Tuesday comes from Old English timacrwesdæg.
