Etymology: Old English twesdæg, literally, "day of Tiw (god of war)" : the third day of the week Word History The Germanic people who lived in northern Europe in ancient times worshiped many gods. One of the most important of these was a war god whose name in Old English was Tiw. The third day of the week was known as twesdæg, "day of Tiw," in honor of this god. Modern English Tuesday comes from Old English twesdæg.
